We may still live in primitive times. In the grand scheme of things, we haven't really occupied this planet for very long.

If we are still primitive, then we also still seem to need simplistic social control mechanisms and perhaps, seemingly antiquated social guidelines to give us structure. But we have advanced (to some degree) in many of our cultures. For example, we in the United States wouldn't kill a woman for the "sin" of adultery (as would happen in some parts of the world), nor do we typically give "eye for an eye" punishment methods.

It's important to note that sin, and the accompanying punishment, vary between cultures.

One might also argue that the concept of sin is necessary for the propagation of our species. By this I mean, if we allowed the sin of murder as being generally socially acceptable, we'll surely kill ourselves off.

Of course, people say they kill in the name of God, and it has the same effect, so what would otherwise be considered a sin is converted to a holy act.

If we didn't have punishment, what would be the alternative? Maybe the best we can do now is better discuss how to define sin, ensure the person is guilty, and better define how to make the punishment fit the crime.

Been around since the garden of Eden. But only because it is such a simple and basic concept that people figured it out centuries ago. If you go against the laws of God, nature, the country, our parents, or whatever, then certain consequences will follow. Still as valid today as it has always been.

Obviously, by definition, it is a primitive concept. Primitive also has a negative connotation that I am pleased to attach as well.

If it is truth, how can one grow beyond truth?

The assumption is that religion is invented. While many religions have been invented, one cannot lump them all in together. God has revealed His will through the Bible, and it will continue to say what it has always said: that those who transgress God's law will be punished, unless they obey His commandments and are forgiven (Matthew 7:21).

not really.
it's just true that behavior has consequences.
the world is that way.
for example if you go out without a coat you will be cold.
make a mistake, you will pay the price.
whatever kind of mistake it is.
you don't need god involved to have
consequences of bad behavior.
