I am going to buy a (Black) Remington 870 Express Super Magnum on tuesday. Its cost 360 dollars and comes with a 30 dollar mail in rebate. What do you think of this gun. I know it can shoot the 3 1/2 inch magnum shells. Whats so special about the big shells? Is it the bigger the shell the bigger the hole it puts in its target? Well it would be helpful to hear everything you guys know about this gun. Thanks

The Remington 870 Express is one of the best shotguns you can buy for the price. It has good balance and is very reliable. I have had one since I was a kid, and Have hunted with it probably over 500 times in the harshest conditions, on everything from quail to turkey. As for the Super Magnum part, I have mixed feelings about the 3 and a half inch mag. It gives you longer range and more hit power on things like Geese and Turkey, but I have always been able to kill whatever I needed with a 3 inch, or 2 3/4 for that matter. If you intend to do a lot of Turkey or Goose hunting, and want the extra pop, go for the Super Magnum. Otherwise, I would just get a regular 870 Express and save a little money.

The 3 1/2 " shells will have a very hard kick. If you are not used to shooting a Magnum shotgun you will not like this gun with heavy loads. A semi-auto uses some of the recoil to eject and and load another shell-this give you less felt recoil. I prefer the Remington 1187 Premier the wood is much nicer than the "Express models" and magnum shells handle well in it.

870 express is a very good gun for the price. It has no tendency to jam and is very durable. The larger shells increase your range and buckshot load giving you more bang and power. Make sure that the gun will chamber the smaller loads as well. You don't want to be useing 3.5 inch shells all the time, it's not only expensive but overkill if you just want to hunt partridge.

i own a 870 and i think it's a great gun. 3.5 shells are extreme unless u plan on shooting long range. 2 3/4 will gonna do the job just fine and is $100 cheaper.

It's a very good gun but I would stay away from the 31/2, unless your a big guy they have more kick than I like and the 3 will work just as well and they work very well with buck shot

More power. I haven't fired the 31/2 yet but I like my Super Magnum

870's are great guns. A 3 1/2 inch slug doesn't make bigger holes in paper but would slam a 250lb. buck harder. Penetration!

I love mine. Its great for bird hunting. The larger shell has more distance and more impact. Kicks a tad more to but, not bad. I have shot several deer with mine. so its also a great large game gun. I haven't had any trouble with mine at all. I have a rifled barrel and a bird barrel. Sounds like a good price to me. Mine was slightly less but that was 3 years ago.
