Well, I'm finding out from trying to get my dad's records that all of the records were lost in a fire in St. Louis in the 80's I think.
I guess it just depends on when your father was active in the military.
There wouldn't be any harm trying, though.

Apparently for older wars like WWI and II, Viet Nam and Korea, these records were not on computer disks. (saved).; they were still paper copies and destroyed in the fire.
