Personally, I think it is. If somebody told me they believed the Queen of England was a reptile I'd laugh at them.
In my opinion religious beliefs are equally baseless, so I should be free to ridicule them if I wish.

Yes, it is. Political, racial, societal, cultural, etc. insults are exchanged all the time. Comedians, artists, and the media have a field day with them. Why should religion be an exception? If you reworded that question to read "Is it okay to insult republicans?" there would be an astounding number of "yes" replies.

However, that being said, perhaps if everyone just stopped the insults across the board, life would be more pleasant.

It is ok as long as you are an equal oppurtunity insulter. All of them have something to be made fun of so don't just take it out on the Christians, the Jews and Muslims deserve it too. They all believe in the invisible man. I wonder if they believe in the closet moster too? I know I do. And by the way, the Queen of England, yeah, she is a reptile. Have you seen her lately?

I think it is wrong to try to abuse and belittle an individual because of his or her beliefs. People cannot help what they sincerely believe. However, no person should have to feel apologetic for asking sincere and legitimate questions about anybody's religion.

Many people believe as they do because they are naïve, or rather uninformed, and they have been "taken", often by cults. I do not think anyone should try to abuse or insult them. They should try to help them by tactfully informing them and questioning them on certain points. Some of these dogmatic indiviuals are under tight control, mind and physical, by their families as well. They seem to have been brainwashed into thinking that to ask oneself reasonable questions is to be evil rather than human. Mind you, some people feel threatened when asked questions about their religion and they soon become provocative (and also appear to be dishonest). It is hard not to become huffy in return.

In summary, I think the issue of motivation is important. It is wrong to deliberately set out to abuse people. However, sometimes, certain types of confrontations are difficult to avoid. Some of these annoying people are victims of circumstances that are passive. (The Mormons don't seem to like me because I have asked questions and they seem to be reticent, which provokes a reaction.)

Re. David Icke: I like his stance on Freemasonry, which includes some religious cults. However, I admit that his theories about reptiles are a bit too much. They make interesting science fiction and it is a fanciful idea that some of the most annoying people are descended from reptiles. Reality has to kick in though.

no. that is what a lot of wars are started over. if this queen of England person existed i would also find them idiotic, but i would not say so. i would laugh inside but my expression would not change at all. this would offend a person and would be wrong. like you i find religion baseless but i do not incite hate in doing so. i choose to keep my mouth shut and i advise you to do the same. if you do want to refute the hate of someone who opens their mouth in an offensive manner. tell them why it is offensive to an atheist and ask them how they would feel if you did a similar act.

Equally baseless by what measures? May I then insult you for your choice of music or TV shows?

There is nothing wrong with discussion and debate but it is childish and prideful for any of us to simply insult others.
It shows we are too lazy to have logical arguments against a belief and too unintelligent to think clearly.
Study, then insult if you must.

What do you base your opinion on? What research have you done? What scientific proof do you have?
Regardless, it's childish to insult someone because of what they believe but if that's the kind of person you wish to be then that is what you'll do.

I think it is not right to insult anyone. There are diplomatic ways to show that god doesn't exist. Though if I had to choose, I'd rather be insulted than be a victim of a suicide bomber.

I think religions are given way too much respect. I see nothing wrong with laughing at rediculous beliefs, but it's likely to piss people off.

According to the 1st Commandment, not only is it OK, it's a requirement for being a christian.

You need to arrogantly believe that you are right, and everyone else worships a flase god.
