I couldn't say about the world but I've been all over the US. I'd stay away from popular places like Orlando as it is too crowded and too expensive. Best depends on things you like. I enjoy scenery and history. WDC is great if you haven't been there. Alaska is awesome! New England in the fall is great. Our National Parks are superb. Everyone should see Yosemite, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon. For relaxation, go to Hawaii but not Oahu.

For urban destinations in the US, I'd have to agree with WDC for the sheer volume of what there is to see in it and its surrounding area. I am also very partial to Seattle and San Francisco for their cultural allure. For family oriented fun, I always recommend San Diego. For beach and night life, Key West. For historical interest, Tidewater and Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.

You see ... you can't answer that question, because it's all in what you're looking for in a vacation destination!
