Cats are an independent species. One of my cats comes running the first time I call her, and she's been that way all along. Another, I'd have to call a couple times and whistle. Another won't come near me without some serious coaxing. So, the cat could be shy, scared, or just independent, depends on the animal.

Some cats never will-
but most will learn to come when called if you make it worth it to them. Give a small treat or lots of attention when they do respond,
never do anything unpleasant when you call them to you.
Save the nail trimmings for some other time.
It is really worth training your animals this way, I
was able to get my cat out of the house after an earthquake
becasue he did come when called.

Cats are stubborn! They know you are calling them but they have better things to do at that particular time. Like hide in a new spot to make you think that they may have slipped past you and ran away outside only to be eaten by the bald eagle that flies over the house every single day. Sorry got a bit sidetracked. My cats continually do this to me. They hide, I call, and they ignore me. Very intelligent creatures, but extremely stubborn!!!!

Not sure, I started calling my cat by her name when I first got her at 8 weeks old. I've had her now for a year and she comes to me when I call her, but we had one cat when I was growing up that never responded to her name. I think it just depends on if you start early calling their name. I also clap and my cat comes to me which is fun as well. =)

I have 2 cats one named Mickey Mouse and one named Precious. Mickey will come if I sound like I'm hurt or in trouble, Precious comes only when she wants to. Cats are the most independent animal I know and they seem to revel in the fact of confusing their owners.

Cats are very hard-headed animals so don't worry the cat you know probably know it's name just is trying to show you that you can't control his/her life. Just the cat being hard-headed!!!

They just don't want to. Or they will, just on their own schedule. I often call Lucy C. Tabby and it may take her 10 minutes to come from the living room to the bedroom but she gets there.
