A lot of good answers here so far.

I would say,
out of shape/beginner 20 - 24 minutes
Intermediate (not with runner's build) 17 - 19 minutes
Intermediate (thin and not too short) 15 - 18 minutes
Decent Experienced and Dedicated Runner 12 - 15 minutes
Good Competitive Runner 9 - 11 minutes

It blows my mind that the world record is about 8 minutes!

EDIT:
But I agree with the above statement that if it's just
fitness you're after, time isn't so important.

Any physical activity is determined by age and level of condition your body has. In the army where soldiers routinely run two miles, 14 minutes is a good amount, running at about seven minutes per mile.

I'd say anywhere from 10-14 minutes is a good time.

For your edification: the WR for 2 Miles is 8:03.54 set by Daniel Komen of Kenya on July 14, 2006, in Lappeenranta, Finland.

That depends if you are talking about competitive or recreational. My daughter can run 12:15 for 2 miles cross-country, but that was competitively (she is 13).

I run 10 minute/mile pace... so about 20 minutes... and remember... you don't have to be running 7 min paces to be fit... people like myself who run slower paces can still run long distances and be fit, it's not all about speed.
