Hi I have reached a dead end in my genealogy research. I am trying to find more details on my maiden line with the surname of Mayou living in Warwickshire, England. I know that my grandfather born in 1918 and my great grandfather born in approx. 1875 (this is a very rough estimate) shared the name of Sydney Mayou and my grandfather's mother was either named Rose Lilian or Lilian Rose, but this is all I have. Because Mayou is such an unusual name I have reached a total dead end.

Any tips or UK sites (preferably free) appreciated

Sorry- forgot to say- I am a member of ancestry.co.uk and found my grandfather on the death certificates (born 1918, died 1988) and what I think is my great grandfather in the 1897 marriage records. Apparently this was his first marriage as he was married twice and had my grandfather by his second wife, but I can't see any records of another marriage.

The free thing is because I need my mom's credit card and I've had that a lot recently lol

I just looked for Sidney Mayou born 1874 on Ancestry.co.uk. Mayou is an unusual name but that is not a disadvantage, Angel, it is an advantage in genealogical research, believe me . (My own surname is Kirby which is a nightmare as it is a very common name!) You already have your own entry on Ancestry for the 1918-1988 Sidney Mayou, I see. There is another researcher whose Ancestry.co.uk ID is "adoull155" who is researching 18th and 19th century Mayous in Coleshill, Warwickshire (probably the same family?). You need to log on to Ancestry again, find an entry by "adoull155", and then post a message on Ancestry for him/her. Best wishes, Steve

If you're searching for info and have details past 1901 then you could try putting what you know onto www.genesconnected.co.uk. It also has a search option, currently there are 72 Mayou's listed, several of them in the Warwickshire / Birmingham area. There are 2 Sydney Mayou's born in 1918 listed and one born in 1875, so they may be who you are looking for.
It is £7.50 to join for a year but after that is free to contact other people. You can then email the people with Mayou details on the site to share information.

Have you tried www.freebmd.rootsweb.com Its an ongoing project to list the registration index of Births, Marriages and Deaths. So far mostly in the 1800s and a few in the early 1900s.
Took a look at the USA immigration records and they show a Sarah Mayou arriving from Birmingham (which is the area in which Sidney Mayou married Rose??) on 26/01/1920 and she was described as a widow aged 59 and going to live with a daughter in New York. Could be a relation? I don't know!

Hi. I too am searching for family history.
I have used www.rootsweb.com for family names search and they do have a message board that you can put messages on for all over the world. I found 16o with the name you mentioned of Mayou but not in the message boards, but they do have one for the UNITED KINGDOM area.
Also www.familysearch.com (done by the Latter Day Saints Church)
Both these sites have been quite helpful. I have found new family members that I didn't know existed.

Difficult if you are not willing to spend a lot of money. Start by doing a family tree on line at ancestry.com (it's free to sign up and you have access to some information there.) You may not be lucky but it will be fun to do anyway. Good luck
