Some people see themselves differently that others see them. It is the reason people become anorexic when they are only 100 pounds. It is usually a chemical imbalance that is causing depression and low self-esteem. They actually think they are fat. You are doing the right thing by being supportive and telling her she is not fat. Try to talk to her about counseling or a support group so that it doesn't turn into anorexia or bulimia.

The society puts a lot of pressure on being thin - especially women. When I was in high school I would think I was so big (being a size 9). But now I am 24 years old and I am a size 18. I think back on being a size 9 and that was perfect! Tell her she is lovely just the way she is.

Sounds like she's cruising for an eating disorder. Its the society in which we live that dictates our perception toward how we look and feel about ourselves. TV, movies, and magazines convince us that we're not attactive if we don't match the models. This is such a farce! Eat well and be active and exercise- and a couple of things will happen... She will lose the the little weight that makes her unhappy with herself and her self confidence will grow as well, not to mention increased energy and better overall health.

Stupid media is ruining our women! I almost got like that when I was about 12 years old, but got really lucky because I had a ballet teacher from russia who yelled at me for wanting to be thin in a world full of people starving. Some of her family had been killed in a Japanese concentration camp too. I was thin anyway, she worked us to death. But what it did was make me realize that now I'm older and a little bigger that it doesn't matter nearly as much as the media wants me to believe. Screw them!

because there is so much pressure in society to be like a size 4 or smaller that being anything more than that can make a girl feel huge, even when she is an average size...

To her, she is fat. Exercise with her...help her eat right. When she wants that big 24 oz. soda, tell her no, that you think water is better, since you are tired of her complaining how "fat" she is, and you are only trying to help.
