Yes, paint thinner is a petroleum product.

Some of the older ones are carcinogenic (cancer causing), but most of the current thinners are not LISTED as carcinogenic in their respective MSDS's (Material Safety Data Sheets). I have attached a link to an example of one such MSDS.

To determine if your husband may have had health effects due to exposure at work, consulting the MSDS's for the chemicals at his work site will be a good first step.

OSHA will be very interested if workers were not properly protected (with PPE, see MSDS for details) from exposure.

Yes most non latex paint is full of petroleum products, many of them carcenogenic, mutegenic and teratenogenic.

Paints or solvents can be petroleum based ----- or water based . Normally, if the paint cleans up with water, it's water based ------ and if you need a solvent or paint thinner to clean the paint , it's an oil based paint.
