The line the masseuses always give is that massage releases toxins into the body and the extra water will help flush them out.
Sounds great, reasonable, intuitive almost. But I've seen no published work on it. Nothing that toxins in ones urine increase after a massage - and that would be pretty easy to look for. And nobody ever says which toxins - heavy metals, hormone mimics, LDL (bad) cholesterol, plain old lactic acid?
I think it is mostly a heart-felt assumption passed around from masseuse to masseuse and through massage schools. It is great marketing at the end of a session to convey concern for your health and promote a supposed objective benefit beyond the fact that the massage feels good and you feel fewer aches and pains after wards.
And most of us SHOULD drink more water, anyway. But I haven't noticed any difference between drinking a lot of water or not after a massage any different than usual (I pee more, I'm a bit better hydrated as assessed by skin "tenting", etc)

here's what I heard: getting a massage releases "toxins" into your system, and if you don't dilute the toxins w/a lot of water, you will get aches and pains the day after your massage. exactly what these toxins are, I don't know.
