I got myself an acoustic guitar and been trying it for about 6 weeks. I like it and my fingers are killing me :) Still, after 6 weeks, I still find it hard to quickly get the 'G' and 'D' chords, 2 of the most popular chords.

Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here" seems so easy, but I can't play it fast enough and get clear notes.

How long does it take to be good with an acoustic guitar? is it possible to teach yourself or you absolutely need technical advice from a teacher/professional?

FYI, I'm 38 and the guitar is worth about $130.

It's possible to teach yourself. It will take more than 6 weeks of practice to be able to play a song well. How long it takes depends on how often you practice. Your fingers will eventually stop hurting once they form callouses. Practice switching between different basic chord combinations until you can do it effortlessly before you try to tackle a song. G, D, C, E are pretty common and then add in A and F. Time of Your Life by Green Day is a good beginners song to try.
