1. You must understand the entire ecosystem and the balances. (Phd scientists)
2. Pinpoint the human interferences with the ecosystem and whether or not each issue is significant.
3. Correct the issues that significantly damages our life sustaining environment, and monitor the issues that are not yet causing a problem. The clear cutting of rain forests scares the heck out of me for example.
I don't give a rat's a$$ about saving a rare species like a snail darter or dodo bird. What worries me is the pollution that makes it impossible for any creature to survive.

It means the preservation of species and their habitats that need to interact with other species and their habitats for survival. This mutual dependancy is the ecosystem.
Helping to preserve the ecosystem could be as simple as detoxifying a stream; allowing deer and other migrating animals a place to drink. Also, that would allow the fish in the stream a chance to survive.
