I have a 2000 Wrangler and I am getting only 12-14 MPG. Is this the way it should be or can something be fixed and adjusted so I can improve milage? Any suggestions would help out a great bit as gas is now over $3.00 a gallon. Thanks.

12-14 whoa! i used to get 16-19 mpg. unfortunately, that's the way jeep wranglers are. trade it in if you can't handle the mpg. although i miss my jeep, i don't miss the trips to the gas station.

Jeep Liberty Gas Mileage

13-14 is not average BTW

I have a 2004 wrangler with 33" MT R's, lockers, 456 gears and I get right at 20 mpg.

the gears helped a lot by providing the power and torque, but like a lot of people said the basic mods like, K&N cold air intake, exhaust, Throttlebody Spacer, and a power chip are all things that will make it more efficient, but won't help much cause it sound like you may just need a tune up.

I assume since it is a 2000 it has somewhere around 60,000 miles at least. Start by changing the pcv valve, air filter, changing the sparkplugs, shoot some carb cleaner, put some good oil and a good oil filter in it, put some synthetic oil in the fron & rear Differentials. You might have some build up on the valves if it has been running on bad gas so some high octane gas and some additives should knock that stuff off.

Then you can really start sinking money into it!!!

it's true Jeep for me at least means just empty every pocket. but i can't think of a better way to spend money .

12-14 is about average - I assume(big mistake) that you have a 4.0 inline six to get that mileage.
There is really not a lot you can do. Make sure it is tuned up, buy a high flow air filter - K & N, tire pressure, etc. The additives and such that claim to increase mileage are basically a ploy to take your money. You may try a fuel injector cleaner additive once a month to maintain the injectors. I use Lucas brand. Other than that, you're pretty much where your gonna be mileage wise. Good luck, have fun Jeepin'.

I get about 17 MPG in my 2002 Wrangler X soft top, with about 80% being highway miles at 75 MPH, the rest being various forms of stop & go, with slightly aggressive tires.

Besides the other suggestions, one way to lower weight is to never fill your gas tank. Carrying around 9.5 extra gallons adds about 60 lbs you are always lugging with you.

Another trick is to go with (slightly) oversized tires (& a change of speedo gear), which effectively lowers the ring gear ratio, meaning more distance travelled with every wheel turn.

The jeep is as aerodynamic as a brick. The thing that lowers my gas mileage the most is when the windows are open & the top down, since that makes it even less aerodynamic. I actually do about 1.5 MPG better with A/C than with top down, but best is with windows closed and vent (not A/C) on. I can get 21+ MPG on a long trip (full tank used) under these circumstances.

JUST EMPTY EVERY POCKET my azz, don't hate , the Jeep line is one of the best 4x4s EVER , not only is it a truck, its a family car that can get you out (and into) trouble.

The Roots of the Jeep line gos back to ww2 when they needed something to get around off road, and the GIs gave it a nick name "Jeep".

Jeeps have been copied from wanted to be like for a long time. My 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited can tow 6,500lbs carry 5 people, has all the stuff a 90,000 car has but can ford water up to the air intake at headlight level!!

It has a full time 4x4 system that can send 100% of the power the ONE tire that has traction to get you going when other company's would have you spinning tires.

My grand have never failed me not my 1993 ZJ or my 1998 5.9 LX, not my 2002 Limited WJ, they are all most perfect.

Sure the gas miles are not like a metro pulling two 1/2 axles around with a happy mid sized in line 6 with the ability to take you in deep is not easy, nothings 100% but if I had to be in one type of 4x4 for my life to depend on (outside military stuff) it would be a Jeep.

Long Live the Jeep!

I would buy some fuel injection cleaner. BG makes good stuff. Clogged fuel injectors are one cause.

Check your spark plugs. It may be time to replace.

Check your tire pressure. This is the most overlooked cause of poor fuel economy!

E85 Gas/Alcohol mixture can have an adverse effect on gas mileage if your Jeep is not set up for it. Summer is known as a time that fuel companies change the fuel mixture.

Hope this helps.

Jeeps were never designed to be fuel efficent. If you are getting 14 MPG you are doing better than average.

But if you still want to increase your milage do the following:

- Change your tires from the knobby mud tires to a set of smooth radials. Michelin tires seems to have very low rolling resistance.
- Get rid of any excess weight that you are carrying around in the vehicle.
- Make sure that the tire pressure is correct or slightly higher. An underinflated tire causes more drag
- Change the spark plugs, wires, ignition coil and air filter. If any of these items need replacing, the computer will still allow the car to run good because it knows how to overcompensate for the difference. And that difference usually comes out of your fuel economy.

I've read some articles about adding acetone to my gas tank.

I've started doing this and have seen an improvement of 10-15% better gas mileage because of it.

Add 3 oz per 10 gallons of gas.
