No Americans that I know of call a coffee shop a drugstore. I have never heard that term used for coffee shops and I have been an American my entire life.

I'm assuming that you don't know many Americans nor have you been to America. No one that I know of calls a drugstore a coffee shop or vice versa. Many years ago, your drugstore was also the soda shop. Serving sandwiches, sodas (the old fashion way), ice cream, etc. Those times have mostly gone by the wayside. Although in some smaller communities you can still find the soda shop and the pharmacy in the same building.
Who ever gave you that information, gave you false information. Besides, stereotyping people period only shows ignorance.

Because it is a drug store. A coffee shop is like Starbucks or a small corner cafe where people meet for coffee, not a place that sells other things.
