It could be me, but it seems as if whenever I'm driving on local roads or highways, the police car is always maintaining a speed around 5-10 mph over the legal posted speed limit. Why is this?

Because they don't have to. Most have only a rudimentary knowledge of the law. The CA vehicle code states very clearly that they are not allowed to break any code unless they have a red light and siren on. The good news is that if they get into an accident while driving over the speed limit (or running a red light) and they don't have their red light and siren on, they can get cited. (and if not cited, definitely suspended - nothing like a few days off on the beach without pay to ingrain some mindless officer).

More good news: The CHP investigates all police related accidents wherever they take place. This takes the ball out of the court of the local PD (who would surely cover up any wrong doings -- it is just the nature of law enforcement to lie for your buddies -- SOP)

None of us ever do the actual posted speed limit unless there is a police officer driving by us. I'm sure you usually drive 5-10 over the posted limit. But when the cop is driving next to you or behind you, you always slow down. They could be headed to a call also without lights and sirens.

I think almost everyone drives over the posted speed limits! I know what you mean about police driving faster than everyone else though. Who knows why? They are people with guns!

I pretty much stay at the speed limit because I could never afford a ticket! Beside, it really doesn't make any difference in actual time saved unless you are going a very long distance. 30 seconds saved isn't worth the hundreds of dollars in fines, wear on the car, and gas!

During the shift they get calls for service, some officers sign on their shift and immediately get 10 or more calls to run as fast as they can, they make the most important ones, then report calls, so they are trying to get to someone as fast as they can, some of those calls may have been holding for an hour or more.

It's just that they are always under staffed and still expected to do the same job with less help.

Most police would rather drive slower, but they are always being pushed by someone else to get their quicker, so blame go's on the supervisor's pushing them all the time.

Some of y'all need to look some laws up in a lot of state Police are exempt from laws like speed, seat belt, and yes I know you have seen the cop driving around at night with no lights on. And yes a lot of you are right if a cop hurts someone while doing these things he is at fault and could get in trouble.

They're required to.
Most city police are ordered, and authorized to cruise about five to ten miles an hour above the limit. If they DONT, they only see the cars they first saw when they turned on to that road. If eveyone goes the same speed, they'll never see another car till someone turns. Their job is to survey as much traffic as they can - this requires greater speed.

Easy...its because they have "BadgeAmericard", the only symbol of authority that permits them to drive over the speed limit with impunity, accept gratuities without shame, and to expect preferential treatment at all local businesses.

And you just thought they were in a hurry to get to the donut shop before it closed....

Because they can, they should obey the speed limits like everyone else should and if they are caught speeding, they get points on their license like everyone else.

because they are a law to themselves, i have noticed they usually all are over speed limit, unless they are following you. Think its the uniform gone to their heads
