Are you talking an open or a sealed bottle?

An open bottle will generally maintain for 24-48 hours before the wine starts to overly break down. It doesn't spoil, it just because half the wine it used to be. The oxygenation breaks down the complexities.

A sealed bottle is harder to tell. If the wine has seeped through the cork, then it may be bad. If when you open the wine, it smells like wet newspapers, it has been 'corked' and is not fit to drink. I also find a coffee/dirt taste on wine that has gone over to the dark side. If you aren't sure, visit a wine shop and ask them if they have any 'corked' wine that you can smell and possible taste. Have them open your wine the day that you want to drink it and see if it's still 'good'. If not, you are right there ready to buy a new bottle. If so, they'll have been happy to help, especially if you come back to buy. : )

if it has a vinegar smell to it it probably has been open to long or has a crack in the seal...avoid these kind, they are not tasteful and need to be thrown out...it is also a good indicator of how fresh a wine is, check each wine bottle that is open for the vinegar smell...

Sometimes a red wine will begin to smell like vinegar, or smell sharp. Don't drink it if it does....
