I usually like to buy them because when the kids are little, they are so visual. Professionally decorated cakes can have pictures that are recognizable to the child (cartoon characters, animals, etc.). When the kids are older, I make their favorite kind of cake because then, they are more interested in the taste than the decorations.

Well I have a 4 yr old daughter, 8 yr old son , and a 11 and 12 yr old step daughters. So from that experience I can say we and all the family like to have the birthday cake home-made. For one it really does taste better and for two...the kids love to decorate it. The last cake (which was in April) we spelled out happy birthday with M&M's. It is fun to be creative. And the kids will remember that more likely then a store bought on. So take some special time on that special day and let them have the fun cooking.

My mom always let me make or decorate (when I was really little) Looking back, it probably was due to the fact that there were 6 kids in my family. It made some great memories for me. My 3 and a half year old has donned an apron and helped me bake and decorate her last two cakes. Her 4th birthday is still 6 months away and she already asks about flavors, or theme ideas for her cake. We are keeping a special album of her baking and posing with the finished product. (Last year she dumped a whole jar of sprinkles in the center of her messy little cake).
My son will do the same. Every child loves to cook and play with candy decorations.
Have fun and make some great memories.
(P.S. for a big party, have cookies and ice cream on hand for those who don't appreciate your child's creation)

Homemade is best you can buy Dunkin H's brand and you can get your own frosting and color it and make cute decorations on the cake. Children always love the Decorations of balloons and little star decorations on the cake. They even have it where you can print a picture off your computer with this special paper and put it on the cake someway. They dont appreciate when you buy them things because our children are as spoiled as we are. So a Dunkin H's cake that is real cheap will fill the need of a child. They also like it because Mommy or Daddy made it for them and they get to see how its made.

Definately Homemade. I have made each one of my kids cakes for their birthdays, plus my 2 nephews. That's about 20 cakes. We usually pick a pan that correlates with the decorations or what they like. My mother in law bakes them, we make yummy buttercream frosting, and then I decorate it. They look great and my kids love watching and helping out. Plus, I love the compliments they give me. I couldn't get all that with a store bought cake.

While my kids are young.... 1,2,3 etc. , I like to make thier cakes. They really don't have preferences at those ages and it's nice to be able to do something special for them. Now that my son is older I buy him his favorite character on a store bought cake because my cake decorating abilities aren't the best!

Homemade because: 1) You know what ingredients you are putting in the cake; 2) You can decorate it how you want (or how your child wants it); 3) You can make the cake however big you want it.

I prefer homemade decorated cakes. I enjoy making their cakes myself because you can add those little things that you know more about your children. Mine always got excited when they knew their birthday's were coming up because mommy was going to make their cakes. It is cheaper and there are so many cool things you can get to put on their cakes. It's that little added touch of love that means something to them. It gives me pleasure to take the time to do something for my children.

I'm all about home made through and through...

Its more personal. You can get creative and make a fun cake, but are people that lazy to just go order a cake?

Especially for milestone birthdays such as firsts...

I worked in daycare and for birthdays a majority of the parents BOUGHT cupcakes to bring in for the kids. Its their first birthday and you're BUYING cupcakes that are simple to make, and you can make them healthier by making them yourselves. The stores use so much sugar and preservatives in this stuff.

Definitely homemade. My mother has made so many cakes over the years, and she always goes out of her way to make and decorate each of her grandchildrens cakes with care and love. She's made everything from Arthur, to Strawberry Shortcake, to Cars, to gosh, you name it! It's one of the many things she does very well, and it's a memory of her that she is creating in her grandchildrens minds also. Plus you know, there's nothing quite like mom's homemade cooking (or baking).
