Usually you will not get your first choice. My husband's first choice was Germany, and his second was Fort Lewis (WA state). He got stationed at Fort Lewis for his first duty station. Germany, ironically, became his second, which is where we are now.
Fort Lewis is wonderful, BTW. If you have no problem with rain, anyway. I hear Fort Bliss is pretty nice. And Fort Lee, Virginia. Fort Bragg has a high deployablility rate.
I know you want to be near Texas, but Germany is a decent duty station as well. The winters are horribly cold (at least here in the Rheinland-Pfalz), the summers seem EXTREMELY hot, but the post itself is pretty nice. The FRG here is wonderful (at least for the unit my husband is in), and we could ALWAYS use decent people to work at the clinic. Most of those nurses are NOT very polite. And they never answer the phone.
Good luck to you, and your family. It may not be an "easy" life, but it is something to be proud of!

Most Army bases have a good selection of what you describe. If Texas is of interest, you may want to look at Ft Riley in Kansas too. Affordable cost of living, camping and fishing, close to Topeka and Kansas City for sports of all kinds. The Royals and Chiefs are in Kansas City, and so is a huge new raceway. Topeka has Heartland Park, with drag racing and dirt track. Kansas City has Worlds of Fun amusement park. You have Kansas State just a short distance away in Manhattan. The base is expanding, having a large influx of personnel including the Big Red One. Manhattan's Mercy Hospital is just almost done with an expansion project to make it a state of the art facility. Junction City's hospital is in the planning stages of its own renovations. So education and recreation are good and abundant, and jobs are available. The weather is the downfall, if there is one. Hot summers, cold winters, thunderstorms, and the threat of of rare tornado. Some don't like that, but Texas isn't much different as far as I know. And all places have their good and bad points. Some have earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, and FT Lewis in Washington has Mt Ranier which is a volcano which could go active any time it decides to. Let's put it all in focus. Gas is just now at $3 a gallon here. It may not be the cheapest in the country, but I know for a fact it's nowhere near as expensive as most of it. And there's NO TRAFFIC!

The chances of getting your first choice are slim to none but you never know! Fort Lee is nice but I found the outside activities for family rather slim unless you want to travel. Fort Campbell is rather large and Nashville has many activities, housing is okay on base and outside housing can be found that isn't too expensive. I've heard that however that some of the neighborhoods have gone down hill in recent years though. Good luck where ever you land and remember that even if you don't like a location you will be able to move in few years!

No, not Fort Hood, it's the black hole. Once you get there, you never get out. Plus, Hood has a severe housing shortage, and unfortunately, a high crime rate (funny how that kind of stuff surrounds military bases.) I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpfull about finding one. The one I liked best was Fort Lee, Va.

Generally it is hard to get a guaranteed assignment to a specific post on your first enlistment.
However, most post have good childcare. Education is hit-or-miss because Congress shut down the on-post schools (which were rated as the best schools in the nation) in order to save money.

It will all depend on what your job will be as far as where you can go, was that not explained by your recruiter? You don't get to choose what base, you choose a job go to basic and then do a dream sheet from the bases available to your specific job.
