you could buy a car, the best place to look is on backpacker notice boards (in hostels/backpacker mags like tnt and british balls) as many are returning home and like you brought one for traveling and no longer need so it will be cheap. also check out 'wicked campervans' if your backpacking around as they have all you need to travel, you can sleep in it and cook etc. you can also pick it up in town and drop it off in which ever town you finish and its cheap.

Walking would be cheapest, but a little impractical. I have heard that this is possible in relation to Europe, but don't know anyone who's done it. If you buy a crp car then you aren;t gonna get much done, and I expect that you would have to take a much reduced offer on the car or risk not selling it at all. It's not an option that would appeal to me, I reccomend that you use public transport- look into getting passes, I know you can get ones in US to last for 6mths/ a fortnight or whatever, which might be cheaper if your planning to do lots. & maybe rent a car for reaching more inaccessible areas. Have a fab time!!

Rather than renting a vehicle you could purchase a cheap one at the city you arive in. then when you have finished your trip sell it.
There are other alternative like a motorcycle or round australia bus ticket with Murrays or Greyhound/pioneer.
Lots of tourist purchase vans and cars to do this trip so it is very common. You do need an international drivers licence and a postal address at least to satisfy the registration requirements if staying long time.

Asia is cheap; hostels in Oz and NZ run about $30 of the appropriate dollar each per night. Remember that the pound is quite sick at the moment.

I did just that, bought a camper van which solved travel and accommodation problem then sold it for the same price when I'd finished with it. Bargain!
