I live near NYC and I want to stay in the continental US. I don't mind driving or flying to my destination. I would like some suggestions for a fun but reasonably priced vacation in the US. Do you have any suggestions of where to go? What's there (in your suggested area)?

My suggestion is to fly to California ; visit San Francisco drive down, via San Jose, to Monterey/Carmel then on to Yosemite nat park.

No explanation necessary for offbeat San Fran; San Jose is high tech, Monterey has the mexican/ hispanic tradition, Carmel its ritzy and rich, and Yosemite to rough it out with Nature and beautiful sights.

The itinerary will take you from major city thru agricultural areas, small historical places and finally nature in its pristine state.

It would be nice to know what you wanted to do. What do you consider fun? Amusement parks, National monuments, hiking, fishing, historical sites, what? There are so many things to do in this country. On the East coast there are beautiful beach towns all up and down the coast. A little further in and you have bluegrass states, beautiful with Nashville or Jack daniels. Further west still you get Mississippi or any of the great fishing camping and hiking spots of the upper midwest. Keep going you get the Rockies great for hiking or skiing depending on time of year. wow you are at vegas or the Grand Canyon or the Hoover Dam. West coast OMG the stuff to do on the West Coast. Now know that all throughout the country there are Six Flags or various other theme and water parks. Pick an activity then pick a state. We have 48 of the most beautiful fun filled states in the world. Enjoy

If you are like the other Yankees I met up there you can go six blocks and find something new. Go run with the hash house harriers. There is a kennel in NYC. Go windsurf in Long Island Sound. I think New Jersey has bear hunts occasionally. Live dangerously. Look up the site of the Cotton Club. Go look for fossils within 50 miles of your home. Go see West Point, Kings Point, and Annapolis.

I've been fortunate to travel all over the USA and here's my list:

1. New Mexico: Fly into Alberqueque; rent car drive to and stay in Santa Fe. Stop in Madrid and visit old cowboy town ...many cowboy films done here...check pottery stores along the way.
Explore Santa Fe.
Visit the homes of Anastazi Indians...pueblos, Indian Reservations.

Drive up to Taos and explore. Stay the night if you can.

2. San Francisco...explore...Ghiradelli Sq., visit the Pier, waterfront, museums...go to Tiburon, across the bridge to Berkeley visit U of C. campus.

3. Bar Harbor...explore the town, ferry to Nova Scotia...hike the mountains and hike along the sea. EAT BEST LOBSTER...beautiful New England towns all along the coast.

I'll add Arizona ({Phoenix, Sedona, Tucson); Nantucket (great Beaches on Atlantic Ocean and quaint town full of fun.

And if you haven't explored NYC:
Here are some ideas of what you can do while in NYC. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:
Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.
UPPER WEST SIDE:
Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,
Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.
MIDTOWN:
Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.
St. Patrick's Cathedral
Museum of Modern Art

Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!
Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.
Empire State Bldg.
The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.

CHELSEA:
Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.

WALL ST:
Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.

THE VILLAGE:
Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers

SOHO:
Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!

Come to Idaho Falls, IDAHO! You would be within 100 miles of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, and some of the best trout fishing in the west.

Wow does she not get the hint you guys want alone time to be newlyweds? I think you should somehow politely tell her you wanted it to be just for the two of you as newlyweds. Thats not much to ask for, i mean your a grown woman, you can take charge.. and of course your husband doesnt see it because its his "family" and probably wants to stay away from anything that comes close to dramma.
