E.coli is an organism found in the gut of nearly every higher life form (birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals). Its there for a reason: digestion, conversion of pro-vitamins to usable nutrition and to bind fecal matter. People on long-term antibiotic therapy eventually develop loose stools, vitamin K deficiencies, and a host of other secondary problems (ie. yeast infections). Treating feed animals to eradicate their E.coli will result in similar problems in the animals. Treating the meat after processing is an expensive proposition; I think a bacteriophage would work but would be a tough sell to the FDA and consumers. The best solution is to rinse the meat in water and cook it until all traces of redness are gone.
