Unless the above assertion occurs in a discussion where the people know each other very well, it can't help but give the impression that the speaker is incredibly arrogant. How on earth can a theist (usually a Christian, as it happens) who doesn't know me claim that I "never really tried"?

They have no intelligent, rational arguments to offer, because they've never thought through the issues themselves, so they fall back on ad hominem stuff.

That doesn't mean, however, that there are no intelligent, rational arguments.

Well I think they say it from Habit because MOST of the people they meet haven't also the Belief of many is if you reach out partway God will do the rest (and that is true in many cases) however I agree that it is also true that in some cases there have been people who Have searched for God all thier lives and never found the truth (look at Ghandi and Bhudda) So I don't think it is a good blanket statement and I never say it. I instead say. "Don't worry God's Hounds are still trying to Find YOU." (this is taken from C.S. Lewis' personal story where he talks about the Hounds of Heaven chasing him)

Well, it's actually an open ended deal. First of all, you can't "Find" God, per se. Trying to find God, is like trying to find the point of infinity.....you know it's there, the formula shows it....you'll never reach it.
A lot of scientists, for example, believe that God doesn't exist, simply because we can't see him, feel him, touch him, taste him, or locate him with any present day knowledge. They try to discredit miracles, say that it's a hokey religion, and as well, is outdated.
Now, let's ask this, and see if you see my point of view.
First of all, the Big Bang....what was around before the big bang?
Second, if the Big Bang did happen, What were we before it happened? Was there other Bangs?
What caused the big bang?
Also, to have faith, in God, you have to believe. For a scientist, he simply has to have a theory. take a black hole, for example. You can't see it, you can't taste it, you can't feel it, you can't touch it, and you can't prove it's there. The only thing, that you can locate it with, and even this is in question, is X rays that come out of it....but then, if that was the case, than it isnt' a black hole, correct? Nothing is supposed to escape it, not even light.
Guess Hawking was wrong on something for once.
To sum it up, it's not a case of trying to find God....see what sort of influence he has in people's eyes...the help he gives the sick...the faithful, who pray for help....even the dying, scared to go, want to be near the Lord....because, they know the other side, has something that either scares them to death....or guarentees an everlasting life.
Good luck, in your faith journey.

He's easy to find and He wants you to find Him....... but it's not something you can do in 5 minutes. You have to be genuinely looking and not just in the hide and go seek kind of way. Open up your heart, talk to people who really are awesome believers, and you too will find Him. I "tried" to find God for 25 years before I really gave it a true effort. You can't "try to find God" on a Sunday morning and then smoke weed on Monday, get in a fight with someone on Tuesday, screw some random person on Wednesday, cuss like a truck driver all day Thursday, etc. You have to listen, because God will not reveal Himself to you if you're just playing around. He doesn't have time to do that. I'm not trying to say that you haven't really tried but I think that a lot of people don't give it a real try, and they think that they can't find God because hey, they tried for one hour on Sunday. There are 168 hours in a week! An hour on Sunday is a half of one percent of your week... and that's IF you go every week! Imagine if you tried to find your shoes when you were getting ready for work and you couldn't find them after looking for half of a percent of the time it takes you to get ready... that's not an honest effort. Surround yourself with godly people. Turn on Christian radio. *Gasp* Crack a Bible open and read it instead of playing Xbox! If you can't find God in a half of a percent of your time, then congratulations, you're not really trying.

Jesus said not judge others mens, you must forgive them and say"God please forgives them because they don't know that they say."
Every men lives in God,in every life there are many good things, each men lives the love, the peace, the charrity in his family, for children, parents, for husband. God is near us,we must give to God some of our time,we must think what is the peace, the joy,the spiritualy love, the charrity and we will find the answer in our soul ,in which is a part of God Spirit from the Creation of men.To be arrogant is a sin.

The Bible says in Psalms that if you search for truth as you would search for silver and gold you will find treasure.

Also it says in Romans that "'who so ever' (this is you) calls upon the Name of the Lord will be saved'".

Basically God says he can be found if you seek him. Thats probably why they assumed you never tried.

I would be glad to help you with this if you are serious. No church, no joining any denomination, no nothing but the Holy Sprit. No funny stuff-no bull.

Some just can't believe there are those who don't need imaginary friends. They need to justify their fantasy by imposing what they view as guilt. Because they know deep down that they are mired in a group delusion and feel threatened.

Just look around you. How does the flower bloom? How did the dog learn to bark? And on and on. If you keep looking and pondering, you will find God.
None of this is by accident! It was created. This is the point I am trying to make. So then who created it all? Jesus.

They must feel like their stance on God is correct, so anyone who does not believe is a reproach to their belief system. So they tell you you are not trying to find God if you question, doubt or even reject their particular brand of beliefs.

Interesting questions again today. I think their point is that if you don't feel a connection with God, he is not the one who cut the cord. If you look for God, you will find him. So, in their minds, if you haven't found him, you haven't looked, or you haven't looked hard enough.
