I have just moved to devon & was kind of freaked out to think that sharks are in our sea. Just wondered if anyone has come accross anything like this in the uk. I saw a seal swimming close to the shore in brixam but thats about it. I am interested in all kinds of marine life in england if anyone has any interesting facts or sightings! I just need to know that Im safe when Im swimming in the sea!!!!

I used to swim in the sea in Australia and never really thought about it. More people get killed by wasps than sharks each year. There are many species of shark in our waters Porbeagle, Mako, Thresher, Blue, Tope, Basking with Great Whites being a possibility as the seas warm up but the chances of coming into contact with any shark whilst swimming close in land are so remote you've got more chance of winning the lottery.
Please don't let scaremongering ruin your enjoyment, there's absolutely nothing to fear from sharks in our waters. I think that movie "Jaws" has a lot to answer for.
I'd be more worried about cutting my feet on a Razorfish shell, stepping on a venomous Weaver's spines or trying to avoid a floating turd or rubber johnny.

You are safe, even if there is the odd great white roaming our waters every now and again you are extremely unlikely to see it or get eaten by it. Some one told me that even in places like Australia with big shark populations you are more likely to get hit by lightning than be involved in a shark attack. Watch out for the seals too though, they aren't as cute as they look and can bite through bones as a surfer in East Anglia found out when one had a go at his leg. Scary stuff.

Anyway don't let it put you off going into the sea, you are lucky to be near some of the best beaches in the UK. And remember if you hear the jaws music get out quick ;)

I htought it was making a little information go a very long way. Lots of clips and cgi of great white sharks in all sorts of places other than UK coastlines. A bit disappointoing really.

Your chances of seeing a big shark, other than a basking shark around Devon and Cornwall are very remote. But hey, good luck
