Human body is like one big battery. We are energy and during our "awake" state, that energy is being used and spent in many different ways.
When sleeping, our bodies are re-charging and our minds are recuperating. If, per example, a person does not sleep for one week straight, it can litteraly drive you to insanity, you will start to hallucinate.
Also, our hearts need the sleep in order to function. Lack of sleep can affect our blood circulation, which in return can result in not enough blood being pumped to our hearts because blood will be pumped into other areas (like the brain, ect...), in order to compensate for the lack of sleep...
Basically, we could not survive without sleep.

Why humans sleep is because that they need to be rest up for any big day that is ahead of them. It's part of human behaviour and human psychology. Why I sleep is because that I am tired and needed to be rest up for another big day that is ahead for me!

Sleep is more for the mind than the body. If you could totally shut down your brain for 15 minutes, that would be all the rest you would need.

Like hunger and thirst, sleep is a basic biological drive we can't ignore. In fact, when we don't get enough of it, our bodies eventually force us to make up for the sleep lost. However, why we sleep remains a mystery–and one of the biggest unanswered questions in psychology.

Interesting phenomenon!
Actually it is not essential for survival. Some people can get by on very little or no sleep at all.
