actually it was not wrong to drink wine, Paul told Timothy to drink some wine for his stomach. the water system was so bad that wine was the only choice. however, anything done in excess is a sin.. that would include eating too much or anything done outside of moderation.
anything that makes you have a loss of judgment or loss of control is wrong. that would include getting drunk or stoned. God gave you a good mind, use it!

I would like to know anywhere in the bible that says to give strong drink to those that grieve. why would it say that when it says to stay away from strong drink and the mixed drinks or wine? There are two types of wine mentioned in the bible, fermented and unfermented or the fruit of the vine. Jesus would not make the fermented type and He never did, nor did He ever drink any of the fermented wine or condone its use. I will give $20,000 cash to anyone that can show one place it says He ever did either. HE said to stay away from those things that hurt the body and alcohol and marijuana sure hurts the body as many scientists and doctors and even the police will tell you. More people are killed due to alcohol every year than has ever been killed in any war ever fought. That should tell you something about how good it is.

The Bible does not say do not drink wine.

It says don't be like the drunk person. It warns against those drinking heavily. In other words, don't become an alcoholic or abuse it. That would pretty much cover anything else, like pot.

If you drink a beer now and then, that's okay, enjoy it. But if you can't do without, if you get drunk to the point of becoming unable to drive, walk or carry on a conversation .... you've had too much and apparently can't tell when enough is enough. Those folks need to abstain completely.

The Bible also says to give strong drink to those who grieve, because it will help to soothe them. Lowers their blood pressure a bit, I guess.

the bible talks about the ills that became someone when they were drunken. look at david when his sons saw him "drunken and naked". dont know why they were so offended, but they were.

as for the alcohol and drugs and smoking: because the body is the temple of God, it should be treated with respect.

and also: the no other gods, before Me rule applies. if you get so wrapped up in drugs, alcohol, smoking, sex, and whatever else there is, and you begin to replace God in your life, with these frivoloties, then you are treating them as god (little "g") and that is what is wrong.

as a christian, i smoke a cigar about once a week, drink vodka on a regular basis and i have been known to chase a few skirts that i was not married to. one is directly against the commandments and i have and still request foregiveness.

the other two are a liesurely thing that do not interfere with my faith or my religious meetings. therefore, i hope that they are okay with the Big Guy.

Actually in the Old testaments the priest(the sons of Aaron) and the Levites were not allowed to drink any wine or strong drink(liquor) because they were a preisthood, and Peter talks about it in his epistle saying we are a royal priesthood and a holy nation so therefore we should be drinkers either, but be Holy set apart for the Lords work

In the epistles Paul recommends to Timothy to drink some wine because of his stomach problems. Back then you pretty much drank wine and/or water and that was about it. It wasn't a big deal back then but it does say that you shouldn't get drunk.

Getting drunk is bad.

Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Proverbs 20:1

Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat. Proverbs 23:20

for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. Proverbs 23:21

Wine or beer by itself is not necessarily bad.

wine that gladdens the heart of man Psalm 104:15

Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish Proverbs 31:6

I don't know of any passage in the bible that says you can't drink wine, getting drunk from it or otherwise. Hell, Noah got wasted once. He was naked and drooling in his tent. And, Jesus' first miracle was water to wine. At mass, Christians drink wine. So, you could even go so far as to say the bible supports drinking wine.

People drank wine in those days a lot because the water was bad in a lot of places. Besides, without TV and movies there weren't a lot of fun things to do after a hard day's work.

The Bible speaks of using wine for ailments. It warns people, especially rulers not to drink, as this would effect their ability to make decisions.
As for other things, we are to obey the law of the land.
Anything that would make us lose our ability to think clearly is wrong.
