According to historical tradition, Peter was crucified upside down. So an upside down cross is not an affront to Christianity, as many believe. A cross still does the job, whether it's upside down, rightside up, or horozontal.

Because hanging was not a common punnishment in Rome at that time. Crucifiction was for all slaves and non Roman citizens as well as rebels, enemies of the state etc. It served to prolong death and thus the suffering. It served as a warning to all who passed by. That's why multiple crucifictions took place along the main roads on ocasion. See for example when Spartacus and all his rebels were crucified.

It is more painful to to be hung right side up and the process towards death lengthier. The Romans did not want this to be an easy death but rather one of excruciating pain... which in turn fulfill the prophesy of how he would die... beside this was how crucifixions were done.

It wasn't the position, or the beatings, or even the 3 spikes that caused HIM to die, it was the effect of the spear.
