Grass is pretty indigestible for cats and dogs because they do not have the digestive enzymes necessary to breakdown the fibre content ..which is high. Apart from fibre and water, grass also contains some minerals, vitamin A and sometimes vitamin D.

The nutritional value of grass for cats and dogs is very poor...so there is unlikely to be a basic instinctive nutritional reason why cats and dogs would eat grass ...unless they have a need for dietary fibre itself which is thought to be unlikely. Cats in particular are known to be obligate carnivores and have no requirement for nutrients derived from plant material.

It has been reported (but not scientifically proved) that cats and dogs will eat grass if they have a digestive system problem such as gastritis or nausea. They will also eat unusual materials if they have a nutritional deficiency, or if they are hungry and do not have access to food. On the other hand eating small amounts of untypical foods ..grass, wood, leaves ..can just be a normal behavioural trait and is not important providing the material eaten is not toxic - such as laburnum leaves or sticks. Grass is usually safe - unless it has been sprayed with herbicide or insecticides.

Recommendation :
If your pet suddenly starts eating a lot of grass it would be worthwhile getting your veterinarian to examine it just in case there is an underlying gastrointestinal problem or a nutritional deficiency.

OK, I think I didn't see such an answer...

I once read that, even though cats are carnivorous, they tend to consume an amount of greens when eating the intestines of their victims (grain, as cats most usually hunt rodents, I think) - cats devour the entire body of the prey.

So, as we feed our cats processed food, even though it's special cat food, they still need their veggie portion of the diet - and so they eat grass to suplement it. When I have no cat grass growing at home (I am absent-minded and I sometimes forget to water it :( ) I get my cat some "Indoor Cat" food (I think this one has grass), or another type of food that has carrots or something like that in it. Or I give him a bit of canned corn (making sure it has no sugar or anything like it), which he just adores (he is known for prefering corn, or occasionally cucumber, to meat... he is a little weird, sometimes).

A lot of times, it's so they can make a hairball. Gross, huh? Dogs do it too. When they want to throw up, they eat the grass to stimulate there stomachs into puking, and the grass helps clump the hairball for cats.

It helps him with digestion and also helps him get up his furballs .

It is perfectly normal for him to eat grass. It does not mean the cat is sick or sickening for anything.

You can buy special "cat grass" seeds from Asda (Wal-Mart in USA) that grows rapidly and the cat knows that that is his pot of grass and he can munch it till his hearts content. I have it for my baby tiger, he loves it.

They eat grass to make themselves sick, to get rid of furballs etc, this totally normal, in fact if you lived in a flat it is recommended that you have a tub of grass to hand for your cat.
