you can do most any normal maintenance on the car w/o voiding the warranty. by LAW the dealer cannot 'force' you to go to their shop to have work done. (and voiding the warranty counts as forcing).
now, as to whether you should or not, depends. what all is included in the 20k service? is it just fluid changes? %90 of fluid changes can be done by the home mechanic, cheaper and faster than a dealer can. just make sure to keep receipts, mark the mileage down etc.
later on, if there is an issue, the onus is upon the dealer to PROVE that something you did destroyed the vehicle. so keep you receipts saying "purchased 6 qts oil on 3/22/06" whatever. shoot, you have to keep the receipts of the work done at the dealership also, since they don't keep track of everything.
now. if you replace the spark plugs, and the engine blows, and it turns out you put the wrong kind in...well, then you are screwed.
so make sure you are putting the write fluids/pieces in(should be in the service manual) and keep track of everything.

Absolutely not. As long as you have a warranty the work MUST be done by VW or your warranty will be cancelled. Did you not read this clause in your sales contract? It is for your own protection. And VW would know if you're doing your own work because you have to order the parts from them.
The only time you can deviate from this is if there is no dealership close by. Then you can get written permission from VW for a licensed local mechanic to do the work.
Why on earth would you want to do your own work? If it's to save money, then you can't afford to own a Jetta. Also if you screw up, VW won't help you, and your insurance will go pf-f-f-t.

For most warranty matters you will need a proof of regular maintenance. I'd still suggest visiting a VW dealer for service. Yes, it's a bit expensive, but they use the right parts, they know these cars well and they will check your car all over to insure your safety. Should you have warranty claim in the future, the dealer will look at your service history, and if there is no proof of regular maintenance, theoretically they can void certain warranty claims.

If I had to do throughout back, i does not, never, ever purchase a VW Jetta or VW product. I at the instant own a 2007 Jetta and this is been no longer something yet situation. What incredibly irritates me is that the headliner has come loose and would value approximately $1000 to change. I shop my vehicles for years after paying off and not one that I owned ever had a headliner come loose. talk approximately shoddy craftmanship. And now my transmission isn't situation-free moving and that i in my opinion do no longer choose from now on undesirable information. Oh, and this one is paid for additionally.

I would not, the work that you would do has to be documented by VW or the warrantee is void. Better to ask VW, or go to the website for a contact address.

No. Any repair done by you or any other repair shop (not authorize by the manufacturer) within the warranty period will void it. They have authorized repair shops, find one and let them do the servicing. One more thing, you can get genuine parts from authorized service centers.

I think that the warranty covers car components, it has nothing to do with you doing maintenance on it. In fact I think if you want to do all the work on it yourself, and not bother the dealer, they would be overjoyed.
