Why can they have a square shape or may be a triangle one.What if the red light was round and the yellow triangle and the red square,wouldn't it be prettier?

It is the simplest, more effective and inexpensive way to reflect light, this circular concave shape reflector will reflect almost a 100% of light.
Just light flashlights most of them if not all, have a round light output.
Nowadays it would be possible to make them in any shape your imagination would want because the technology has changed to led light.
We are used to this round shape now and changing it would distract drivers and cause accidents.
This round shape is the standard now, in every country that you may go.

All traffic lights are not round. Take a good look at the new ones that go across instead of vertical. I think you could have fun finding different shapes.

Think its something to do with that they convex that they curve outwards so they can be seen at all angles other than straguth on. if we had traffic lights that were squares or triangles they wold be harder to reproduce in a convex way. so more than likely they would be flat which means at a given time during the day the sun would proabably shine on them making them nealry impoosible to see clearly.

I imagine all the lights are uniform in shape because of cost.
Traffic lights are very expensice, they cost the taxpayers lots of money. The taxes that we pay on gas would go up even more if they made the lights "prettier".

Well, yes, I suppose it would be prettier...but why? They are circles so that they are easy to spot and they are more filled out. A triangle probably wouldn't do you much good if it's not as easy to see as a circle.

Well, it historically derives from the belief that all humans are obcessed with butts ... therefore, they decided to make them round, so, drivers would pay more attention when driving ... it's a good theory!!!
