The Shia - Sunni split occurred much later amongst Muhammad's followers.
It's to do with the succession of Caliphs (the followers of Muhammad) in Islam. Shias recognize Ali (Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law) as Muhammad's rightful successor.
In fact the successor (1st Caliph) was Abu Bakr, who was unrelated to Muhammad. In Sunni Islam Ali was the 4th Caliph, for the Shias he was the first Imam, and the three preceding Caliphs were not legitimate.

They called themselves muslims...they splitted themselves up after he died,
This is a common human error due to his egoism and his greed for power ever since the beginning of the world.GOD created all man equal at the beginning, they gradually divided themselves and formed religions. This can be seen in otehr religions such as Christianity where the people have splitted themselves into different loyalties such as Catholics and Protestants...same thing in Islam..the believers splitted the unity among Muslims according to their conflict in beliefs. When will people ever realise that it is not worth fighting?

Likely neither (though etymologies have some surprises sometimes-as Suni may have meant something prior) .. my understanding is that it was later .. and the Shiah branch claimed it had a third generation direct tribal descendant of Muhammed leading them ...
