A trip to America in 2001. When my husband and I arrived at my sister's house, we found out that my brother's cancer had returned and that he had only a few weeks to live. Our flight from NYC on Sept 10 was delayed one night, and the next morning, the World Trade Towers were destroyed as we watched in horror during breakfast at our hotel in Queens. We were confined to the hotel for two days without even a change of underwear as our bags had remained on the plane. We had to pay almost a $1000 for lodging and food and underwear because there was no way to leave the borough for 5 days. Friends and family had no idea where we were because the phone lines were constantly busy. My brother-in-law narrowly escaped dying at the Pentagon. I missed the birthday celebration my friends had planned for me in Chicago. Finally able to fly out, we arrived home to find that the large tree in front of our house had been uprooted during a "mini-burst" and was wedged in our roof. My brother died. Obviously, some of these events were much worse than others, but it was a hard three weeks.

What kind of holiday do you mean? If you mean vacation, then the one and only I spent in Montenegro. But if you mean holiday, then the New Year's Eve I spent at home, with my "father". I'll never forget that.
