I'm not a Buddhist, but I am curious to know what requirements are for someone to be Enlightened. Are there any who are Enlightened today? Have I seen them on the news? And what exactly is Enlightenment? Just curious to know.

That is what enlightenment is all about. You have realized the truth. Material things dont matter etc. But you have realized it all, including the fact that you have realized it..... that's enlightenment

When You have answers to all the questions you have in your world you attain enlightment.
Each one of us have worries, problems, pain & end of joy in our everyday's life. when we find the cause which results above, we can overcome it by facing the truth. Some pain cannot be overuled but have to be beared / faced eg death of dear one. But when we are enlightened we are enable to accept truth however bitter it is. This is one of the example. We can as a normal humanbeing can practice it only to some level.

The word Bhuddha means - one who is awakened.

So, whoever, who is awakened is a Bhuddha.

Now, you must know what is awakening. Awakening, is nothing but realizing the truth, through a process called meditation.

Now, you must know what is meditation. Meditation, is nothing but a technique, through which one can control their mind and bring it to a no-mind state.

Now, you must know what is no-mind state. No-mind state, is nothing but a state in which you reach a state where you dont have any thoughts. It a blank. You will be in your conscious, but at the same time you dont have any thought.

This state is not dangerous. You will enjoy the bliss. Its an experience. You can come back to your original life at any point of time.

Cheers
