However, lately when I use it and simultaneously open another window, the sound goes totally haywire. Any idea why this happens, is something wrong with my soundcard?) or its settings?

Interesting problem. Is it a particular other window that this happens with, or just any other window whatsoever? This sounds like a problem in the code of the program. How this code was modifed, by what, and why is very difficult to figure out. Computers can appear very random and unpredictible at times because of a large number of factors. My advice to fixing this problem is as follows.

1) Try uninstalling/reinstalling Winamp. If this doesn't help, continue to #2.

2) Uninstall any programs you installed previous to having this problem.

3) If you have system restore, try restoring your system to a previous state - when you weren't having this problem

4) If all else fails, a complete reinstall of windows should fix this problem, preferably following a complete hard-drive format.

Alternatively you can just try using another media player.

Good luck!

Winamp consumes a lot of RAM when running it, dont you notice? As you open more windows or you copy something from the CD Rom or DVD ROM, the sound will go haywire... Unless you upgrade your RAM, or just buy a new processor(higher processor power)... If not just dont open that much windows...

I think its due to loading the file svchost.exe, sounds are based on this file which is been run on windows when it starts. Svchost goes off when loaded. I recommend you to use Winamp 5.24 or WinAmp 3.0 which are much reliable & User friendly. I had this problem when playing GTA Vice City. but now everthings perfect.

Uninstall, use Winamp3.

However, Winamp3 contains a security bug.
So, use a good firewall, antivirus and antispyware (Ewido: free.grisoft.com)
