I know others have asked, but I have found some very good notes on German grammar, but I don't know what to do after I study that. I want to be able to have a good conversation with normal Germans, so not just tourist german.

What should I study next to learn German?

If you are unable to go to Germany, go to http://www.berlitz.com/ This company guarantees you'll learn the language and many government diplomats in the foreign service have used it.
viel Glück!

The best way to learn a language is to take some classes to get a basic level of communication then total emersion.

Travel to Germany and spend a summer there. Do not allow yourself to speak English at all. Even if your vocabulary is limited, use what you know. You will eventually pick up German and expand your vocabulary and learn how people really speak--not just what is taught in a classroom.

If travel is out of the question--look for a German conversation group in your area.

You can only learn so much in the classroom.

That is how I learned Spanish.

If all you want is to learn conversational German then take a Berlitz class and practice conversational German. The problem is that you will probably come out speaking in commands anyway. It takes a while to get used to the conjugations and tenses. You should hang around Old Germans for a while preferably first generation immigrants. They can teach you the most.

Best way is to immerse yourself in German background... like live with a german speaking family and try to think in german. You pick up a language within 3 months with my technique. Ich habe Deutsch eben so gelernt. Nun spreche ich nicht nur Deutsch aber viele anderer sprachen. And because of that I learn to appreciate other cultures as well. A new language is a great eye opener. It teaches you about cultures. And that is why I don't hate others.

Well, study Geography next so you'll know where Germany is on the map. The next thing is, prepare for some money for your airfare and visa. After that, go to Germany and, enjoy the place. Happy German speaking. Tell me me if you managed to get there..
