Well the video source in this case is the DVD player, so what you are deciding is whether or not to cable directly from the uotput of your DVD player directly to your TV or should you route it through your AV receiver.
Route it through your AV receiver all the time unless your AV receiver does not have the input connectors you need. I am assuming your DVD player is not the high definition flavor, in this case I would choose to use the component video output (three cables red , green, blue). The advantage of running it through the AV receiver is that once you select DVD, it switches the video and audio at the same time.

A lot depends on the quality of your TV and DVD player. Feeding the DVD player directly into the TV will give the best quality, and if you are really picky, that's the way you should go. The circuitry in the AV receiver can only degrade the DVD output signal. However, the difference may not be noticeable, and really applies only to high-definition component or RGB connections. Also, you have to switch both the TV and the AV receiver to change sources. It may be necessary for you to use the AV output: if you have several devices, the TV may not have enough external inputs.

It depends. Look at the back of your TV. Determine the best video input on your TV, do the same thing on your DVD player and A/V receiver. Say all three have component video, use your receiver. If not, go straight to your TV. It's really a convenience thing to cut down on how many remotes you use to select and watch and listen to a specific component. Quality wise, it really doesn't make much difference.

Not really understanding your question fully but here goes, your receiver really does not have anything to do with your video signal. You should connect your video signal directly from your DVD player to your TV. So it would then depend on what type of connections between your DVD player and TV.
Here would be the order of connections preferences; 1 HDMI, 2. component, 3. S-video, 4. composite or RCA.
