Without going down in detail, can you recommend me a PC? I want to use the mini PC for my educational needs.

Which Motherboard, Processor and Memory I should go for?

What are AMD Athlon, AMD Sempron, Intel Celeron or Pentium 4? What do they mean? Which one should I go for and why?

AMD is the diminutive of Advanced Micro Devices. It's a cheaper alternative to Intel.

The present 64 bit AMD chip is good. You can fit it on an Asus Motherboard configured for the chip you buy.

Athlon, Sempron and Celeron are Product names.

Intel Pentium 4 is the latest range of Intle processors, which are very expensive, but they come with their own mother board.

24 pin 1 GB memory chips and 18 pin DDR 512 MB Memory chip slots are available there on the mother boards.

You should get at least 1 GB RAM onboard.

Both AMD and Intel motherboards come with onboard AGP, sound and LAN cards; so, all you need now is the HDD and the DVD Rewriter to become multi media. and a monitor, keyboard and mouse. Optionally, you can add a printer or an all in one, printer scanner copier.

Costwise, these peripherals have very little difference in price, so, you'd do better to go in for the all in one and the DVD Rewriter rather than a Combo drive which is just a ROM, and a printer separately since that's almost two thirds of the cost of an all in one.

To save money on the OS, you could download and install free Linux [Ubuntu is good] which comes with free Open Office, which will save you a lot of money!

MS Windows XP and MS Office, other than being expensive, suck, big time!

All the best.
Cheers.

PS,

Almost forgot, while asking for AMD 64 but, and Asus motherboard, prefer the "Cool and Quiet" series. They're the best and not much difference, costwise.

AMD and Intel are chip manufacturers. these chips are like the "brain" of your computer and dictate how fast your computer runs. the higher the number, the faster your computer will become to run programs. get pentium 4, its faster compared to AMD. also, AMD chips heat up faster so you'll need a bigger fan (comes with the cpu case). pentium 4 chips come with their own fan, so your computer will have 2 fans - one for the microprocessor chip and another for the motherboard, video cards, ram, etc.
for the motherboard, get an Asus branded one. for the processor speed, 2.4ghz is good enough if your budget is limited. if not, get the 3.0 ghz. i think 256 mb memory is good enough if you only want to use your computer for educational purposes (unless "educational purposes" means playing games ^_^).
