Hi there,

I'm a little worried because I'm not celebrating Lammas as such, but I'm casting a very important spell instead. I've looked through so many books but I can't find the time that I should do it at - is it tonight, or tomorrow night? Many people have told me to do it the night before, and then the spell is put into action by Lammas, whereas others have told me to do it on Lammas night? I'm so confused :-(

ALSO, IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER, AND ARE PLANNING ON CRITISIZING MINE OR ANYONE ELSES' BELIEFS, THEN PLEASE DON'T COMMENT AT ALL - THANKS ;-D

You shouldn't stress so much about the timing of a spell. The intention is much more important. Now, as for the appropriate time to do a Lammas spell, generally all Sabbats are seen as beginning the night before and ending the night of, so it's always best to do it the night before. As for the actual date of Lammas, popularly it's August first, but astrologically it's halfway between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox, or the first full moon in Leo it can be anywhere from July 31 to August 7th. Of course the full moon isn't until the 9th! And halfway between the equinoxes is.. .if my math is right, which it rarely is... last week! So yay. Have fun with that. If I were you I'd do it tonight though. And you should still celebrate Lammas. Bake some bread and do an offering at least! It'll only help sweeten your spell.

No fixed calendar date could exist because the Celtic calendar was based on the lunar, solar, and vegetative cycles. Although tradition has set August 1st as the day Lammas is typically celebrated, it's not necessary to do it exactly that day.

You may want to consider picking up Llewellyn's Magical Almanac - there's a new one every year just like a Farmer's Almanac - it will have moon phases & such in there that will assist you with accurate sabbat times & dates.

Whichever feels right to you. There are no hard fast rules. Remember to the ancients there was no exacting calender so it was a guessing game anyways. As long as you feel it is right then it is.

Well wishes for your magick. Blessed Be.

Do it when ever you think it should be done. Paganism is about going by what you feel, not following a set of rules.
