How can we find out the effect of brackets within quadratic equations?

It's just that they seem, sometimes, to change numbers from plus to minus, and vica versa. There has to be rules, do we know what they are?

The rule is that whatever is in the bracket is worked out first. This means that it can change the numbers around it, but you work out what is between the brackets first, then the stuff around it.
