Someone with an Asian background would probably have an easier time learning Portuguese, whereas native English speakers would have an easier time with German. Both of these are still hard; all languages can be a bit tricky.

Mark Twain said that eternity was invented so that you can learn the German language. Well, he was being ironical, German is a beautiful language, just like Portuguese, but I believe German grammar makes it less accessible to foreign speakers.
Portuguese would be easier for me to learn because it's a Latin language just like Romanian (my native).
However, you should not just consider grammar when learning a language. Look at the fact that Germany is a very powerful economy and has a great influence in the world, with fast moving multi-national, German-based businesses. So if you want to be pragmatic, go for German. If it's something you want to do for pleasure, your choice, it depends on your preference for that particular culture, literature, movies. Good luck!

Hard to say.
German is a Germanic language (so is English) while Portuguese is a Romance language (like French & Italian).
Personally, I preferred learning German. I don't really like Romance languages...
Unless the language you want to learn has had some influence or is from the same group of languages as your regularly spoken/written languages, your background shouldn't matter so much.

English, has germanic and romantic roots, so really learning either will probably be equal in difficulty. (unless you have a native speaker of either that can help you).
But in usefulness, I'd suggest Portuguese, Most Germans speak english, so you'll already be able to communicate with them, I don't know about Brazilians, but I've been to Portugal, and really very few understand english.

Depends on from where in Asia you are and what your mother language is.
For Indonesian and Tagalog speakers I would recommend Portuguese, because the sounds are much closer to the ones in you own language. You will also recognize some words, like Indonesian "mentega" (butter), "jendela" (window) and "bendera" (flag), that came from the Portuguese.
But even for people who speak a "tonal" language, like Chinese and Vietnamese, my guess is that Portuguese will come easier.
