All colours have associated moods that are universal to the human psyche, with the exception of culturally codified colours e.g black and white are both used to signify mourning in different cultures and thus have opposite associations. The use of colour in Art tells you a lot about the psychology of colour - look at some paintings and see how the mood of the piece is enhanced by the use of particular colours e.g. Edvard Munch's "The Scream", Van Gogh's "The Potato Eaters"
Examples are;
Warm colours - red, orange, egg yellow.
Cool colours - white, lemon yellow.
The more white a colour contains the more soothing and cooling it becomes.
Intense and dark colours have a more muscular and powerful effect.
Primary colours are more cheerful (think about the difference between the colours of kids toys and the colours of office equiptment)
I painted my room at college a rich, deep blue because it was such a lovely colour, but it created a horrible, suffocating atmosphere.
