I'm due to do a reading at a wedding next week and I want to do something non-religious, unusual and maybe humorous. It definitely needs to be deep and meaningful and not too long. A little info about the bride and groom. The Bride is of indian (as in india!) heritage and the groom is scottish. They are great travellers and have lived all over the world. Any ideas?

If you want non-religious, a poetry reading would be nice. I've seen many people read a poem that they themselves have written...usually it is a parody of a famous poem or song, or Dr. Seuss redone...and it can be very witty and charming.

If you'd rather include real poems by published authors, I suggest checking out:

for poems for weddings. It is a pretty good source that I've recommended to various Best Men and Fathers of the Bride in the past.

Good luck!

I Wanna Be Yours
John Cooper Clarke (b.1949)
I wanna be your vacuum cleaner
Breathing in your dust,
I wanna be your Ford Cortina
I will never rust,
If you like your coffee hot
Let me be your coffee pot,
You call the shots,
I wanna be yours.
I wanna be your raincoat
For those frequent rainy days,
I wanna be your dreamboat
When you want to sail away,
Let me be your teddy bear
Take me with you anywhere,
I don’t care,
I wanna be yours.
I wanna be your electric meter
I will not run out,
I wanna be the electric heater
You’ll get cold without,
I wanna be your setting lotion
Hold your hair in deep devotion,
Deep as the deep Atlantic ocean
That’s how deep is my devotion.
this is an example of serious
The most wonderful of all things in life is the discovery of another human being with whom ones relationship has grown depth beauty and joy as the years have increased.
This inner progressive love between two human beings is the most marvellous thing
it cannot be found by looking for it or even by passionately wishing for it
it is a divine accident (it is guided by the hands of fate) and truly
the most wonderful of things.

True love is a flame
That burns eternally
And none can dim its special glow
Or change its destiny
True love speaks in tender tones
And hears with gentle ear
True love gives with open heart
And truelove conquers fear
True love makes no harsh demands
It neither rules or binds
And true love holds with gentle hands
The heart that it entwines
and the key to love but that might be a tad long for you

The Knot puts out a book on vows and speeches. It was at my local library and I am sure it is at yours too!
