The question would have been more intellectually and factually honest if it were worded as follows:
Are overly homosexual people mentally crippled by the heterophobia, Godphobia and bigotry inherent in their vile lifestyle?
How can we help them overcome their disability and their their immunity to factual truth and intellectual honesty?
God has never put his stamp of approval on the homosexual lifestyle, calling it an abomination and stating that all who persist in it will ultimately end up in a very bad place. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah? God still loves the homosexual and longs for them to come to him and be cleansed, but leaves it up to the individual. And God does not pick on Homosexuals, but includes them in a list of many things that indicate one is heading the wrong way. John 3:17 says that Jesus came not to condemn, but to save a lost race... By the way, you may consider me "'overly religious" because I happen to believe in the Bible, but believe me I am not homophobic...

It's a difficult question. For individuals who's belief system is used to justify their personal bigotries and hatreds for those different from them, there is not a lot that any person outside of their religion can do to help. Any "outsider" attempting to sway their views on a topic will likely be viewed as "satanic", "liberal", or " a sinner" who is trying to convert them from the true "will of god" (I don't capitalise God in that instance).
However, nearly every religion on earth teaches love for others - not hate. It's only the zealots and extremists of those faiths that pervert the teachings into justifications for their personal bigotries. The religions themselves are not breeders of hate, it's just certain individuals within those religions that contort it and skew the interpretations.
Christianity for example: Christ taught tolerance and love for everyone. He actually spent time hanging out with the people who were ostracised by society and who were condemned, hated, and the subjects of bigotry and prejudice. Christ loved them as he loved any other person, and he spent his time showing them that they were loved and welcome.
Christ was more critical of the church and the pharisees than he was anyone outside of the church. He knew that churches were corrupted which is why the New Testament teaches people to not judge those outside of the church, but to love them. It also teaches that fellow believers should judge one another so they can walk closer to Christ and keep each other in check to help avoid corruption and pharisees.
I think it's important to understand that religions in themselves are not bad. It's only the extremists and the individuals who pervert religions to justify and validate their own agenda who are bad and give religions a bad name. Hopefully more of the true followers of their faiths will step up in the future and defend their religion against these zealots. We'll have to see if that ever happens though...
