Necrotizing fasciitis is commonly known as Flesh-eating disease, an infection that works its way rapidly through the layers of tissue (the fascia) that surround muscles. It destroys tissue and can cause death within 12 to 24 hours.Necrotizing fasciitis can occur after trauma or around foreign bodies in surgical wounds, or it can be idiopathic, as in scrotal or penile necrotizing fasciitis. The causative bacteria may be aerobic, anaerobic, or mixed flora, and the expected clinical course varies from patient to patient. In short the bacteria causing the infection of the flesh causes death of the cells rapidly, thus it is considered that such bacteria are "eating the cells".

It is a very virulent bacteria that gets into a wound or break in the skin and starts a violent reaction where the flesh goes 'necrotic' which just means it dies. 'Fascia' is skin and underlying structures. Flesh eating bacterias is the common name for this.
