My 6 month old kitten is being castrated tomorrow, and I wondered if anaesthetic can be dangerous for cats? I know some humans are allergic to it, but can cats be too? I know it's probably irrational but I'm worried about him - lol. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated! Thanks guys!

He's not over or under weight, an average sized cat, very active. I wouldnt say he is weak.

Those that mention the preanesthesia blood work, this hasnt been mentioned to me by the vet. I live in the UK, is the blood work just an American thing?

Yes. Very dangerous. But vets know that and won't administer it if the cat is weak or has a condition that might cause complications. The form you have to sign is just procedure. If your kitten is healthy and you have a good vet, don't worry!
There is barely any risk in a neutering.
Often there are problems with a serious wound or traffic accident victim, then the vet has to decide whether to operate or not. If the operation can save the pet's life, but the anaesthetic might damage some organs, or the vet thinks that the pet might not wake up after, then problem becomes serious.
Your kitten will be fine! Relax!

Yes it can, but that is why a vet will take labs prior to doing an operation on an animal. They want to see how the animals system is working. They have you come in prior for lab work and get a blood test prior to the surgery at least a few days to make sure everything in your cat or dogs system is working well so they can metabolize the anethetic. If they did not do that it is a precaution that should have been taken. Some people like to skip it because it can cost money. It can prevent a big problem. If an animal or person has had trouble with anesthesia before that is something to take into consideration. You are right that anesthesia is dangerous in general, but so is being a mating animal cats who are sexual fight more and cats or dog who have babies do not live as long.
Just like people you do not want them to un necessarily go under the knife like plastic surgery, but sometimes it is necessary.

Anaesthtic is dangerous for every animal, and a kitten is no different. But the vets have experience with these things.

Personally I haven't heard of a cat being allergic to it, but if it is, the vets will see this early on and take your cat off the anaesthetic.

Castration is a common procedure, and it's normal to be worried but I'm sure that your kitten will come out better off because neutered animals are less aggressive.

Anasethetic can be dangerous to any animal, including humans. A competant vet will know exactly how much an animal will need. This is normall based on the weight of the animal in question.

Anaesthesia and cats dont mix well, but the products used now are much better than they used to be. I have never lost a male cat while he was being neutered, but have lost two females while they were being spayed. Whatever you do, obey the vets instructions about the time of last feed and drink before the op; it is critically important. Otherwise I dont think you need worry too much. Best wishes to both of you.

All anaesthetic on all animals is dangerous. BUT:-
Your vet is trained to administer just the right dose.
We once took our pet siskin (very small bird) to the vet. She weighed her and got advice on just the right dose to use. Needless to say we were worried, but the bird came round with no ill effects.
I wouldn't worry, your cat is a much larger animal, and your vet should have done this hundreds of times. Of course there is a small risk, but it should all go well
Take care :-)

I just had my cat spayed. She was out of it when she woke up. She walked in slow motion and I was a little afraid but she is ok now. But you can tell that the anethetic is pretty serious. I know plenty of people that have had their cats spayed or neutered and never heard of anything bad coming from it. Ask the vet what the risks associated with anesthesia are. They will know.

If the Vets involved do things properly - which I have every faith that they will - your Cat should be OK :-)

Such operations are rather routine so there should be not a lot to worry about :-)

Any anesthetic is dangerous to any animal or plant.

It depends on what type is used (there are hundreds out there), what animal it is used on, and the dose given.

Your vet will have his/her favourites for various reasons, and will know how to use that anesthetic to the best of its ability.
