my siberian husky is very quiet. the only time he barks is when he wants to go out to go potty. i know huskies are not guard dogs and tend to get friendly with strangers, but can i at least teach him to bark when strangers enter my property?

i think i should add some more details. my husky is no longer a puppy, he's a year and 8 months old. and i don't keep him outside on a leash, but he does spend a considerable amount of time in my backyard (fenced, of course) and he can come into the house whenever he wants to. he'll bark and tell me to open the door.

you can..but then why teach him a habit he may get to like too much!

you could end up with a dog that barks constantly! i have 7 adult dogs in my house right now (3 are fosters) and when they get going O M G! ha ha!
my neighbors are NOT thrilled, and i have to call them inside to keep them quiet.
it gets annoying after awhile.
they will bark when:
UPS man comes
Mail truck
Garbage truck
YOUR FRIENDS or FAMILY! ppl you DON'T want them barking at.
children riding by on bikes
police or ambulance sirens
honking horns
other dogs walking by
someone yelling in the distance
a dog barking in the distance.
etc.

when a dog barks at a "stranger" that usually mean OBJECTS as well..like cars, bikes, sounds. etc.
just be glad he is quiet. if you feel you need added protection....try an alarm system. at least that only goes off when you NEED it to, and the neighbors can't complain.

EDITED:
a year and 8 months IS a puppy. most dogs don't hit puberty (teen age type years) till 2 or 3..you dog is still VERY much a puppy, even if he is full grown. and his personality will be changing a bit too. don't worry..that is normal. they are maturing like we do.

Your dog will automatically bark at strangers once he's a bit older. Usually at that point a sense of fear for a new smell or unknown sound comes into play and he automatically barks.

Also, keep him home a lot, walk around with him around the perimeter of your garden and if you see a stranger come on to your property, try to encourage him to react: "Who's that? That's a stranger! Send him away!" This worked like a charm with our German Shepherd.

get down on your hands and knees when your dog is around you and somebody other than a family member living at your house comes over , and start barking this should provoke the dog to bark and sometimes after this will start doing it on his own.

I guess your husky is still a puppy
when he'll be older, he'll bark at strangers, even if now he's quite friendly with strangers

Dogs just have a natural tendency to bark. Its not something you can train them to do.

dogs seem to have a six sense for this... unfortunately you won't know until it happens. My German Shepard is generally quiet and very friendly but if she feels threatened she will act!!

Most important thing is ,not leting other people even your parents feed your dog. just u yourself give the food to your dog.
dogs can understand you when u speak. tell him what u want
to do. and as he or she does the thing u like u pay more attention and pat him.

you can't train them to bark but they will get the sense if they are bad people.
