He is always scratching himself, and biting at himeself. His tail is looking all raggedy and its oblviously tender and scabbing and it doesnt look good at all. The vet says he might have allergies but i can't afford $300 tests to find out. What should i do?

Switch his food to an alternative protien!! Like Lamb, Venison, Beef, fish. I had this problem before try switching his food and bathing him with a medicated shampoo for hotspots to help alleviate the itching. Such as Professional Pet Products Tar-riffic Shampoo, creme and spray... http://www.dog-training.com/ppp.htm

Here is the kind of food you want to feed him called Natural Balance it will take some time to see if it has an effect but it is usually the case wait about 1-2 months on the new food and only that food no treats unless they are the same meat..

Here are Natural Balance allergy formulas... http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/allergy/home.html

PS my dog had a similar allergy problem and the vet just wants to treat the symptoms not the underlying cause... switching the food should help alot!!

MY dog went through that period of biting his tail up close to his butt. if your dog is doing this he probably has worms like my dog did. you can easily cure this problem by getting a dewormer. it comes in pills or liquid that you put in your dogs food, after they eat it and go to doo doo follow him and look at his doo doo and see if you see any worms.regardless if you do or dont give him another dose of it the next day to insure the worms are killed and get out of the dog. you can find the dewormer at places where pet supplies are sold at and sometimes hardware stores. just follow the directions on the bottle and you cant go wrong. if your dog has the intestinal worms and after you treat him with the dewormer he will stop biting his tail, but you need to do this as soon as possible the worms can kill him painfully fast. and by the way the worm medicine is not very expensive and is the best way to go. just keep an eye on his poop each time he is given medicine to see if worms are present. you may be able to see them sticking out his rectum at times, they will look sorta like spaghetti except flat. this is one type of them called ribbon worms. anyway i hope this info will help you out and good luck.

Another possibility could be mange. One of my dogs had mange and she kept scratching the blood out. I don't remember what we gave her, but after we had her treated, it cleared up and she was fine.
