I am using an electric conventional oven and follow the instruction on the receipe book but the cake always come out to be hard on the top. Wondering is it becos of the temperature - am using the option where heat released from top and bottom.

Your cake has most likely gotten too much heat from the top; even "conventional" electric ovens have their own characteristics, and thereare probably no two alike! If you notice your cake darkens on top way before the time is over, cover it with aluminum foil; if you don't mind experimenting a little, put your cake on a lower rack next time and see if it comes out right. use bottom heat while baking. When almost done lower the temp (100 degrees) and switch both top and bottom heats.Your cake should both cook and colour fine.

does that mean you used a broiler? if so, then yeah.. you don't broil cake, you bake it. also make sure its on the middle rack in the oven

maybe you baked it a little too long, or the temperature was too high?
