How is sucralose made?
1. What is SPLENDA® Low Calorie Sweetener?
SPLENDA® Low Calorie Sweetener is the first sugar alternative made with sucralose: a sweetener that is made from sugar and tastes like sugar but doesn't have all the calories of sugar. In fact, SPLENDA® Granular has only 2 Calories per teaspoon compared to the 20 Calories sugar has per 5g teaspoon. SPLENDA® Tablets are virtually calorie-free with only 0.2 Calories per tablet.
2. What is the shelf life of SPLENDA® Low Calorie Sweetener?
Both Splenda® Granular and Splenda® Tablets have a shelf life of two years. The best before end date is printed on the top or side of the Tablet Dispenser and on the shoulder of the Granular 90g jar.
3. Is SPLENDA® Low Calorie Sweetener suitable for people with diabetes?
SPLENDA® Low Calorie Sweetener is suitable for people with diabetes as part of their healthy diet plan. SPLENDA® Granular has 0.5g carbohydrate and 2 Calories per teaspoon (from maltodextrin) and this should be taken into account as part of your carbohydrate and calorie intake. (This compares with the 5g of carbohydrate and 20 Calories for every 5g teaspoon of sugar). SPLENDA® Tablets are virtually calorie free. Sucralose, the calorie free sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA®, is not recognised by the body as a carbohydrate and has been shown in studies to have no effect on blood glucose or insulin levels.
4. What is maltodextrin?
Maltodextrin is an ingredient that's derived from natural food starches. It provides the volume in SPLENDA® Granular so that it measures and sweetens spoon for spoon like sugar. Maltodextrin is the same type of bulking agent used in many other low calorie granular sweeteners.
5. In comparison to table sugar (sucrose), how sweet is SPLENDA®
One 0.5g teaspoon of SPLENDA® Granular or one SPLENDA® Tablet is as sweet as one teaspoon of sugar (5g). Please check our conversion guidelines for more information.
6. Does SPLENDA® contain Aspartame or Saccharin?
No SPLENDA® does not contain Aspartame or Saccharin.
7. Can SPLENDA® be used to make bread in bread making machines?
Yes. The amount of maltodextrin in SPLENDA® Granular is enough to feed the yeast. It may however take a little longer for the dough to rise. We would recommend using the longest proving time if different settings are available on your bread-making machine. You may need to experiment a little to find out what works best for you.
8. How is sucralose made?
SPLENDA® low calorie sweetener is made with sucralose, the sweetener that is made from sugar and tastes like sugar. Sucralose is made by a patented multi-step process that starts with cane sugar (sucrose). Three hydroxyl groups on the sugar molecule are replaced by 3 chlorine atoms. The addition of chlorine converts sucrose to sucralose, resulting in a sweetener with a high quality sweet taste and which is also exceptionally stable.

Donkersloot adds that while Splenda also is safe and FDA approved, she warns that because the box reads, "made from sugar, tastes like sugar," many of her patients think that Splenda is natural and safer than other sugar substitutes.
"Splenda is not sugar, and it is not natural," Donkersloot said. "The sweetening ingredient in Splenda is sucralose, which is made using a multi-step chemical process that substitutes chlorine on the final sweetener molecule." Donkersloot adds that the addition of chlorine, not sugar, is what makes sucralose indigestible to the body.
About sucralose....
The fact sheet was too long for me to copy and paste but i suggest you read it as they state that more than 13 000 animals have been killed during sucralose testing....

Splenda is bad for you. I don't know the ingrediants of it. But if you were to speak to a nutritionist they would tell you to stick with normal stuff. Not diet. Diet may have less calories but it is bad for you. Splenda over time builds up in your intestines. It's bad.

Crack! That's why it is less fattening than sugar. Haven't you watched Starsky and Hutch the new one with Ben Stiller in it? Splenda is the new crack!

SUCRALOSE
It is manufactured by the selective chlorination of sucrose, by which three of sucrose's hydroxyl groups are substituted with chlorine atoms to produce 1,6-dichloro-1,6-dideoxy-β-D-fructo-furanosyl 4-chloro-4-deoxy-α-D-galactopyranoside.
