Generally it's either 16 or 18, there's a lot of things involved about safety and insurance. As you're so young, instead of joining the gym, how about a dance class, or think about a sport you like and see if your school or local sports centre offers any groups you could join.
The thing is, with any sport or exercise you do, to stay fit, you need to keep it up for the rest of your life. It's ok to swap sports and activities through out your life depending on your current interests, but remember to eat healthy too.
Besides, if you're like me, you won't want to hang around a gym getting hot and sweaty, so I just do some aerobics everyday and I do karate twice a week. Whatever you choose, make sure you enjoy it.

If you are under 14 you shouldnt really weight train with heavy weights because it is a critical time when your bones are growing rapidly. The muscle is attached to tendons which are attached to bone and if the weights are too heavy the tendon pulls on the bone too much putting the bone under strain. Its ok to start using heavier weights after you turn 16 but a lot of gyms will not train under 18's for this reason!

Most gyms won't allow you to join at that age. You probably have to sign up with an adult and go with that person. But, it can't hurt to call the gym and ask them :)
If you can't join a gym due to your age and you have no one to go with...try walking everyday for 30 minutes. You can also ask your parents to buy you some weights (you can get cheap weights that are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 lbs). I like to hulahoop. I got one off of a site called sports-hoop.com. Good luck :)

Well the gym you usually have to be 18 or be 12+ and have a guardian who is with you(in colorado at least), it may be different at the YMCA, or a local Recreational center.

don't join the gym, it's expensive and can damage young bones and joints. swimming is great exercise for losing weight and getting fit without putting pressure on the body. don't worry about losing weight anyway, at your age you're just about to have a growth spurt and it'll all vanish into height!

My gym has kid sessions at the weekend , £2 per hour, over the summer hols , they are holding more sessions during the week.
There IS NO age limit, it depends what the gym is insured for ... ask around , see if any gyms near you have kids sessions ....most council owned ones will.
